CHAPTER 5
My Turn
âI donât understand it! Why canât we just tell her!â
âIâm telling you, it will only make things worse. She could have a breakdown, we need to wait it out.â
âBut I think she would remember it if we just tell her, donât you think so?â
âNo, Iâm sorry, it is against all the teachings in this case. You have to let it run its course. Itâs better for the mind.â
âBut you said she might never do it. You said that!â
âStill. We have to have hope. My answer is the same.â
Without warning, he flicked the knife and caught Brian with it just under the chin. I could see the little drops of blood as he forced his head up far with the edge of the knife. They pooled across the blade as little beads of redness. The color in Brianâs skin, what was left, retreated until he was so pale that you couldnât quite tell he had even been sunburned earlier. It left red blotches high on his face and forehead as he broke out in still more sweat.
âHow about, I just kill him then. He doesnât want to be here anyways right?! He doesnât have to be here! You are right!â His eyes had a gleam in them and I could no longer think. I didnât even realize it but I must have been shaking my head. Dad had started really flipping out, and was raging at the fence and tearing the skin now on his hands something savage. Karen, still, huddled in the corner.
âNo?â Calvin had seen my head shake, even if I donât remember directing it or doing it.
âNo,â my voice was weak, but I wanted to confirm that. No. Donât kill Brian. Donât!
Calvin had some kind of look on his face, but again. I did not understand it. He slowly took the knife away. He had left a bloody trail on Brianâs neck. It added new red streams to the trails from the rag that hung from his mouth. I thought I would be sick again, but just at that moment. Calvin took my attention away from Brian.
âWell. It is your turn then.â I felt like screaming but my mouth was just too dry. I stared at him instead.
Karen took that moment to jump up and run over, throwing herself over me.
âNO, NO YOU CANâT HURT HER! YOU CANâT HURT US! LEAVE HER ALONE! LEAVE ALL OF US ALONE!â She was screaming in such a way and clinging onto my shirt so hard I was sure she had no idea what she was even saying at this point. She probably didnât know what she was even doing but I thought she was going to rip the boring T-shirt I was wearing.
It twisted up in her fists as she clutched me like I was all there was left in the world to her. Dad had become completely incoherent. I didnât even know at this point what was going on. My head was pounding so hard everything seems just completely weird to me at this point and this Calvin person.
